Shelly Bulchandani, the name behind the famous company The Shell Hair, started her journey by initially immersing herself in the world of hospitality, with her family running a thriving hotel business. Fresh out of school, she found herself drawn to the idea of running a business of her own. “I started with nothing, but my dreams were limitless,” Her early ambition led her to a software testing course in Mumbai, a plan that was supposed to secure her a corporate career. However, something within her yearned for more—a desire to create something unique, something truly hers. It was at this crossroads that she stumbled upon hair extensions, a seemingly random discovery that soon became the focus of her dreams. “I started researching hair extensions and felt this pull that I couldn’t ignore,” In a leap of faith, she discussed her newfound venture with her brother, who was initially skeptical.

Nonetheless, his encouragement gave her the push she needed to dive in. With little knowledge of the industry but armed with determination, she sourced her first batch of hair extensions. With her mother’s sewing machine and unyielding commitment, she created her very first hairpiece. The feeling of holding that product was nothing short of exhilarating. “That was the moment I knew: This is it,” From that day on, The Shell Hair was born. Building a brand from scratch came with its fair share of challenges, and she quickly learned that entrepreneurship is more about self-discovery and perseverance than following a textbook path. “I had no guide, no mentor—just a vision,” But as she walks through missteps—incorrect vendor choices, pricing errors, and burnout—she learned to trust her instincts and take responsibility for her decisions. A key lesson she imparts is to always trust yourself, even when others offer conflicting advice. “Listen to everyone, but trust yourself,” she advises. “Your vision is your own.” While many brands in India relied on importing hair extensions from China, Shelly took the bold step of manufacturing her own products in-house. The decision to build a factory from the ground up was fraught with challenges, both financially and emotionally. But today, The Shell Hair prides itself on offering unparalleled quality by creating every product in-house, ensuring that each extension is a testament to their commitment to excellence. In 2024, The Shell Hair expanded its reach exponentially, with over 20,000 women trusting their products. Yet, for her, success isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the lives she’s impacted. “When a woman wears our extensions and sees herself in a new light, it’s more than just hair—it’s confidence,” 2024 was nothing short of transformative for Shelly and her brand.

The Shell Hair’s appearance on Shark Tank India Season 3 catapulted the company to national attention, expanding its customer base and fueling further growth. The impact has been profound—both personally and professionally. “We’ve grown five times this year,” she says.. Starting with just ₹2000-₹3000 from a software internship, she built her business slowly, reinvesting every penny into the growth of The Shell Hair. The journey has been long, filled with struggles and setbacks, but the rewards have been immeasurable. Shelly now employs over 20 women, empowering them to support their families through the success of The Shell Hair. “Don’t wait for anyone to believe in your vision the way you do. It’s your dream, not theirs.” is an advice she’d like to share to the youth of our country.
