Susmi Veliyath: From Medical Physics to Sustainable Stitching

Susmi Veliyath grew up with a background in medical physics, a field that is technical and deeply rooted in science. This path taught her discipline and critical thinking, but she always felt a creative side that wanted to build something personal. She has always had a soft corner for children and genuinely enjoys watching them grow and play. Everything changed when her nephew was born, and his arrival felt like a new beginning that inspired her to create something special for him. She began making little garments in fabrics that felt natural and kind to the skin, which started as a personal project.

Family and friends loved what she made, which made her wonder if this passion could become something meaningful beyond just one child. She had always loved natural textiles and would choose fabrics she loved for her own clothes because of their breathability. That same love found its way into the clothes she began creating for children, leading to the birth of Iris Weaves. Starting with very little investment and a lot of uncertainty, she began with a made-to-order model where every piece was crafted thoughtfully. Over time, she transitioned into a ready-to-ship model so more families could access her collections.

"Those moments make every struggle feel worth it," she says, referring to the photos parents share of their little ones twirling in her designs. As the brand grew, her husband stepped in to handle the website and the technical side, making it a shared journey. They are building the brand with care and intention as a completely online venture where nature is at the heart of every choice. The journey has not been easy, with days of self-doubt and exhaustion, but every day teaches her something new about creativity and patience. From medical physics to tiny dresses, she is still in the process of becoming.
