Shoumyadeep Ghosh: Growing D S Motors Into a Trusted Hero MotoCorp Dealership in Tripura

Shoumyadeep Ghosh, Managing Director and Chairman of D S Motors, Teliamura, did not begin his entrepreneurial journey with a large office, a big team or significant financial resources. His journey started with a mindset shaped by modest beginnings, hard work, self reliance and an understanding of the value of money. His education in Electronics and Communication Engineering also gave him a technical way of thinking, where understanding how things work, finding problems and seeking practical answers became natural habits.

Over time, Shoumyadeep began seeing entrepreneurship as more than owning a business. For him, it meant accepting responsibility for creating value, providing employment, serving customers and contributing to the local economy. Coming from Tripura, where the market is smaller compared with major metropolitan cities, he understood that building a lasting business would require patience and a close understanding of local customers.

The opportunity that led to D S Motors came in 2007, when Shoumyadeep saw the importance of two wheelers in a market such as Teliamura. A motorcycle or scooter can mean much more than personal transport for a family. It can help a student reach college, allow an employee to travel to work, help a small business owner meet customers and make everyday family responsibilities easier.

That understanding changed the way he viewed the dealership. Rather than seeing D S Motors simply as a business that sells motorcycles, he wanted it to provide mobility and build lasting customer relationships. Vehicle sales became only one part of the customer experience. Finance, insurance, servicing, genuine spare parts, maintenance, roadside assistance and customer care became equally important.

Today, D S Motors operates as an authorised Hero MotoCorp dealership and service centre serving Teliamura and nearby areas of Tripura. Its customers include students, salaried professionals, business owners, farmers, traders, government employees, private sector employees, families and first time two wheeler buyers. Shoumyadeep understands that there is no average customer. Each person has different financial circumstances, priorities and reasons for buying a vehicle.

Over the years, D S Motors has sold more than 18,000 motorcycles and scooters and handled approximately 2,30,000 plus service interactions and vehicles. For Shoumyadeep, these figures carry a human meaning. Behind every sale is a person, a family and a particular need. Behind every service visit is another opportunity to maintain a relationship that may have started years earlier.

The early years were not easy. One of the biggest challenges was earning trust in a relatively smaller market. A new signboard alone cannot make customers trust a business. Trust had to come through consistent behaviour, transparent dealings, product knowledge, after sales service, technical capability and professional conduct.

Another major lesson came through building the team. A dealership depends on salespeople, technicians, customer care staff, supervisors, managers and administrative employees. Shoumyadeep gradually understood that building a business also means building people. He wanted employees to know what was expected from them, how their work would be measured and how they could grow within the organisation.

His leadership style brings together discipline and empathy. He believes employees should be treated with dignity while performance must be measured fairly. Training, feedback, teamwork and accountability form an important part of his way of running D S Motors. He also believes that when something goes wrong, asking why it happened can be more useful than simply asking who was responsible.

Customer trust remains one of the achievements Shoumyadeep values most. Advertising can bring someone through the door, but the way a customer is treated can decide whether that person returns. A customer who comes back for servicing years after buying a vehicle, recommends D S Motors to a family member or chooses the dealership again is, for him, a far more meaningful sign of success than a trophy.

The journey has also brought recognition, including a Digital Champion recognition in the North East. Yet Shoumyadeep sees success in wider terms. It includes employees who grow into greater responsibilities, customers who continue their relationship with the dealership and a business that creates employment while contributing to the local economy.

His message to young entrepreneurs is direct. “Do not chase success. Build capability.” He encourages young business owners to keep learning, protect their reputation, understand people, think long term while working on daily responsibilities and remain patient during difficult beginnings. For him, entrepreneurship is not about creating an impressive image overnight. It is about creating value consistently over many years.

His journey with D S Motors has taught him that business growth depends on people, customer trust, financial discipline, learning and the ability to adapt when circumstances change. For Shoumyadeep, the ambition goes beyond selling more vehicles. He wants to build a respected business, develop people, serve customers with integrity and leave behind something that continues to carry value for the community of Teliamura and Tripura.
