Dr. D. Jayashree’s journey in the field of Ayurveda is a powerful narrative of legacy, resilience, and transformation. Born in Karnataka and raised in Gujarat, her fascination with Ayurveda began not in a classroom, but at home, rooted in a deeply personal and life-changing experience. Her father, an employee at Tata Chemicals, was once diagnosed with fistula—a painful condition often requiring surgical intervention with extended recovery time. Instead of undergoing surgery, he chose Ayurvedic treatment through Ksharsutra therapy, a minimally invasive method that not only healed him but left a lasting impression on young Jayashree. This moment was more than a turning point; it was the beginning of a life devoted to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of healing.
Motivated by her father’s recovery and the effectiveness of Ayurvedic medicine, she pursued formal education at the prestigious Gujarat Ayurvedic University. There, her academic foundation was laid, complementing the experiential learning she had already begun at home. But her journey into Ayurveda was far from conventional.
Her marriage into a family that had preserved Ayurvedic knowledge and practice for over 11 generations added depth and authenticity to her pursuit. In 1998, her family’s pharmacy, Ayurvedasramam, marked its centenary celebration—100 years of continuous Ayurvedic service—further affirming her commitment to carry forward this profound tradition.
As she stepped into a leadership role, Dr. Jayashree envisioned expanding the scope and reach of Ayurveda. She first established Swasthavruth in Chennai, a wellness center that offered consultations, Panchakarma therapies, and preventive healthcare solutions. But her ambition extended beyond a clinic—it was about creating a healing ecosystem. This vision materialized with the launch of Shree Ayurvedic Multi Speciality Hospital in Chennai, where she now serves as Chief Consultant and Chairperson. The hospital reflects her belief in a patient-centric approach, where Ayurveda is practiced not as an alternative, but as a primary and complete healthcare system.

Her exposure to the global healthcare landscape in the 1990s significantly influenced her philosophy. At a time when Ayurveda was still emerging on the international stage, she traveled to Europe and the United States, observing the curiosity and respect with which the world was beginning to embrace India’s ancient wisdom. This experience validated her efforts and deepened her resolve to modernize Ayurveda without diluting its core principles. She became a bridge between the traditional and the contemporary, championing Ayurveda’s relevance in the global medical community. One of Dr. Jayashree’s most enduring battles has been against the stereotype that Ayurveda is slow, outdated, or ineffective. She has worked tirelessly to dismantle these myths through education, advocacy, and by showcasing real-world clinical success stories. By integrating scientific methods and diagnostics into Ayurvedic treatment protocols, she has elevated the credibility of the discipline. Today, her hospital is known for effectively managing chronic illnesses, autoimmune disorders, metabolic syndromes, and providing complementary care in cancer therapy.
Her leadership is rooted in a philosophy of balance—respecting ancient roots while embracing the wings of innovation. “Believe in your roots — but never forget to spread your wings,” she advises, echoing the very essence of Ayurveda, which seeks harmony in body, mind, and spirit. Her ability to blend tradition with progress has made her a revered name not just in India but across borders. Through Shree Ayurvedic Multi Speciality Hospital, she is not only delivering holistic healthcare but also inspiring a new generation to believe in the timeless relevance of India's healing heritage. Her story is a testament to how passion, purpose, and perseverance can bring ancient wisdom to light in a modern world.
